Although Rajasthan is a dry, arid region, it is vibrant with festivals, celebrations, and social interactions. The people of Rajasthan celebrate a variety of festivals, embracing unity, tolerance, and brotherhood among different communities, including Hindus, Muslims, and Christians, who celebrate their festivals with great enthusiasm and joy.
Among the many folk festivals of Rajasthan, Gangaur and Teej hold significant importance.
Gangaur:
The Gangaur festival lasts from the Holika Dahan to Chaitra Shukla Tritiya. It is primarily celebrated by women who pray for the longevity of their husbands and for a good partner. On this day, the worship of Lord Isar and Goddess Isari is performed. Women and young girls dress up beautifully for the prayers and later participate in the Gangaur procession. The festival is celebrated with great zeal in cities like Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, and Kota, where the Gangaur procession is a major event, attracting large crowds.
Teej:
Teej festival is celebrated on the third day of the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada (Bhadrapad Krishna Tritiya). It is mainly celebrated by young girls and newlywed women, who sing songs, swing on traditional swings, wear new clothes, and adorn themselves with henna. The Teej procession in Jaipur is especially famous, where the procession is grandly held and the entire city is filled with joy and festive spirit. On this day, women gather together to dance, sing, and celebrate.
Both these festivals are a part of Rajasthan’s cultural heritage and symbolize the social unity and cultural identity of the state. These festivals not only showcase religious fervor but also highlight the deep sense of community and joy that Rajasthanis experience.
