Akbar’s Mewar campaign took place in 1567, with an attack on the Chittorgarh fort in October. Uday Singh entrusted the defense of the fort to his commanders, Jaymal and Fatta, and retreated to the hills. Both commanders fought valiantly but achieved martyrdom during the defense. After three days of intense battle, Akbar successfully captured the fort on February 25, 1568. The massacre that followed the capture remains infamous, staining Akbar’s reputation. Akbar was so impressed by the bravery of Jaymal and Fatta that he had their stone statues placed at the entrance of the Agra fort.
