It would be contrary to the facts and experiences of history to consider medieval Rajasthan as backward in intellectual development. Rajasthan has had many great scholars, poets, and artists who have made significant contributions in various fields. As –
Literature:
- Famous poets and writers: Scholar writers like Magh, Haribhadra Suri, Chandbardai, Surya Mall Meesan, Kavi Karnidas, Dursa Aadha, Nainasi
- Bhakti Movement: The main period of the Bhakti movement in Rajasthan is from the beginning of the 16th century to the end of the 18th century. Belief in one God is a major feature of the Bhakti movement; Like – Dadu, Meera and Dhanna.
- Rajasthani language and culture: Enriched. Dursa Adha (Virud Chihattari), Prithviraj Rathore (Veli Krishan Rukmani Ri)
Arts and Architecture:
- Painting: Development of Rajasthani painting. Mewar, Marwar etc.
- Sculpture: The 15th century was the golden age of development of sculpture in Rajasthan, symbolized by the sculptures of the Vijay Stambh (Chittor).
- Architecture: Forts (Chittorgarh, Jaisalmer), Temples (Dwarkadhish, Jagannath), Palaces (Hawa Mahal)
Brave and Learned ruler:
- Enlightened rulers like Maharana Kumbha, Raja Raisingh, Raja Sawai Jai Singh.
- Respect among scholars in their courts. (Kumbha – Kanh Vyas)
Science and Technology:
- Astronomy: Jantar Mantar in Jaipur
- Mathematics: Arithmetic (logarithm tables), Algebra, Geometry
- Metallurgy: iron production, bronze sculpture
It is clear from the above examples that medieval Rajasthan cannot be considered backward in intellectual development. Rajasthan was intellectually and culturally prosperous during the medieval period.
