Q.5 Explain the main features of “Path Goal Theory of Leadership”
Ans:
Path-Goal Theory of Leadership
House (1971) developed the Motivational Path-Goal Theory, which suggests that a leader will choose and modify their approach based on the motivational level of their subordinates to achieve organizational goals. Four types of leadership behaviors were identified:
- Directive Leader: The leader seeks to provide the necessary direction and guidance to achieve the organization’s goals.
- Supportive Leader: The leader focuses on interpersonal relationships with followers rather than solely on achieving organizational goals.
- Participative Leader: Before making any decision, the leader attempts to consult with subordinates to understand their perspectives.
- Achievement-Oriented Leader: The leader expects followers to perform at their highest level to overcome any challenges.
