Bhil Tribe

Habitat:

  • They reside in remote and secluded mountainous regions.
  • Found in four states of India – Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Main centers – Banswara, Dungarpur, Udaipur, Chittorgarh in Rajasthan.
  • In the Bhil tribe, a big village is called Pal, a small village is called Fala and a house is called Koo/Tapara.

Social Life:

  • Organized into patrilineal groups.
  • Polygamy is practiced.
  • Marriages – common marriage, elopement, bride price(Dapa).
  • They worship nature, agricultural implements.
  • Worship many deities, worship Nagdevata, superstitions.
  • Cremation of the dead.
  • During emergencies, people are assembled by beating drums.
  • The village headman is called Gameti, and the guide is called Bolawa.
  • The tight dhoti worn by Bhils is called Thepada and the loincloth tied around the waist is called Khoytu.

Economic Activities:

  • Main activities include gathering forest produce, hunting, primitive agriculture, and animal husbandry. They collect roots, fruits, flowers, and leaves from forests.
  • Engage in hunting. In agriculture, they cultivate food grains, leafy vegetables, and fodder crops.
  • They rear sheep, goats, cows, buffaloes, and poultry.
