Derr’s model, also known as the contingency model of conflict management, suggests three major strategies:
- Power Play: Balances competing forces and is effective with individuals skilled in power tactics.
- Bargaining: Used when parties display power and need to allocate scarce resources, often leading to formal agreements.
- Collaboration: Best for interdependent relationships, where unresolved conflict is costly, and open disagreement is encouraged.
The model highlights two variables: in-group integration and criticality of conflict issues, which influence strategy choice. As these variables increase, parties move toward negotiation, either through compromise or third-party intervention.
