Ans.

Maharshi Navalram

Maharshi Navalram, the founder of the Naval sect, was born in Harsolav (Nagaur) on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami, Vikram Samvat 1840, into a lower family of the Dalit community. Noticing his spiritual inclination during childhood, his father, Khushalram, sent him to Saint Kartaram of the Ramanand sect. Saint Kartaram named him Navalram and introduced him to the concept of a Nirguna (formless) and Nirakar (shapeless) God. Maharshi Navalram traveled across the country, stressing the value of education and raising awareness against prevalent religious and social evils such as orthodoxy, ostentation, witchcraft, the Sati system, untouchability, the purdah system, and child marriage. He believed that truth, devotion to the Guru, and worship of God were essential for attaining salvation. Advocating monotheism, he emphasized devotion to a formless God, as reflected in his words: “Saadhe bhai hum nirguna deedaara, Naam anaam mein naa hi, abhe akhand swaroop hamara.” Maharshi Navalram composed hymns, couplets, shlokas, verses, and chaupais in the Marwari language. He earned great respect from Mansingh, the ruler of Marwar. The main Peeth (spiritual center) of the Naval Sect is located in Jodhpur.
